How is my Tax Calculated?
Unless you earn over £125,140 then you are granted with Personal Allowance. Personal Allowance is money you have earned which is not taxed. Your tax is calculated after your personal insurance has been taken away from your salary or your earnings. Any amount of money that is within your Personal Allowance limit will have absolutely no tax taken from it, a tax free earning if you will.
For example, if you have a salary of £30,000 then your Personal Allowance is £12,570 per annum. £30,000 minus the £12,570 of Personal Allowance is £17,430. Only the £17,430 will be taxed. However, if you have not reached the state pension age then you will still have National Insurance Contributions (NIC) taken from all of your income. If you are earning more than £184 each week, or £9,568 each year, then your National Insurance costs will be taken as a percentage rather than a set cost.
What is Personal Allowance?
Personal Allowance is the portion of your income earnings that is completely tax free.
