Scale Conversion Calculator

You can use this online scale conversion calculator to convert the size of an actual object to a scaled size and vice versa.

How to Use the Scale Conversion Calculator

  • 1. Select which conversion approach you wish to use:
  • a. Convert from actual (real) size to scale.
  • b. Convert from scale to actual (real) size.
  • 2. Enter the scale factor; for example, if you wish to work with a 1/6th scale, input 6.
  • 3. Enter the dimensions of the actual object (or measurements of the scaled object if you are planning on converting a scale to an actual size)
  • 4. Select the unit of measurement from the drop-down list
  • 5. Click on the "Convert" button to generate the results.

Supporting Information

A scale factor is the number that is used as the multiplier when scaling the size of an object. It can be used to scale objects in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions and as fractions, ratios, percentages, or decimals. When a scale factor is applied, the size of the object is increased or decreased according to the desired scale. Even though the image size has been manipulated, the ratios of each dimension should mirror those of the original.

To scale an object to a larger size, you simply multiply each dimension by the required scale factor. For example, if you would like to apply a scale factor of 1:6 and the length of the item is 5 cm, you simply multiply 5 × 6 = 30 cm to get the new dimension.

To scale an object to a smaller size, you simply divide each dimension by the required scale factor. For example, if you would like to apply a scale factor of 1:6 and the length of the item is 60 cm, you simply divide 60 / 6 = 10 cm to get the new dimension.

The methods of scaling described above operate on the assumption that the scale factor takes the form of 1/n or 1:n (in which n is the factor). However, if this is not the case, some additional work may be required. For, example, let's say we have a ratio of 2:5. To convert the ratio to the form of 1:n, you will need to divide each side by the number that appears on the left. For example, if the ratio is 2:5, you will divide both sides by 2, which would result in the equivalent ratio of 1:2.5. Alternatively, you can employ our online ratio solver.
