Understanding Mileage Reimbursement

If you regularly use your personal vehicle for work purposes, you are permitted to deduct the vehicle expenses from your tax return. You have two options available to you when calculating mileage expenses:

  1. You can keep all your receipts when you pay for any services associated with using your car for work purposes. For example, gas, oil, parking, insurance, lease payments, maintenance, repairs, etc.
  2. You can simply multiply the number of miles you have driven for work purposes by the IRS standard mileage rate, changes on an annual basis. This approach is referred to as the standard mileage deduction. You can also use this approach to deduct any expenses that you incur while driving for charity, medical, or moving purposes.
