Board Feet Explained

The term board foot is used to describe a volume that is equal to a one-inch thick square foot. Rough lumber measurements in width and thickness are employed when determining board feet, even in situations in which the lumber has already been sanded down.

The number of board feet is calculated using the following formula:

Board Feet = Length (inches) × Width (inches) × Thickness (inches) / 144

Let's say we have a one-inch thick board that is 12 inches long by twelve inches wide. We can input it into the formula as follows.

1 Board Feet = 12'' × 12'' × 1'' / 144

It is also possible to determine the board footage of a given board if the length is measured in feet. Simply multiply the width of the board in inches by the length of the board in feet and divide the output by 12:

Board Feet = Length (feet) × Width (inches) × Thickness (inches) / 12

Example:

Let's say we have a board that has the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 2 inches
  • Width: 5 inches
  • Length: 12 feet

How many board feet do we have?

All you need to do is substitute the numbers into the board foot formula. You can then compute the board footage:

Board Feet = Length (inches) × Width (inches) × Thickness (inches) / 144

Board Feet = 12 × 12 × 5 × 2 / 144

Board Feet =1440 in.3 / 144 = 10 bd. ft.

Let's say the cost of the board is $10 per bf. In this case, you will need $100 (before tax) to pay for the required boards.
